Stereoscopic vision: What's the first step?
نویسنده
چکیده
Neurons in primary visual cortex respond to binocular disparity, the raw material of stereoscopic depth perception. Although these neurons are probably essential to depth perception, a recent study has shown that they are unable to compute depth itself.

Correspondence Estimation and Intermediate View Reconstruction
Stereoscopic vision is an important research area since 1861 when Wheatstone introduced the first stereoscopic device. After his basic device many technologies have been proposed to deliver 3D vision to audiences. Although most of these technologies require the viewer to wear special eyewear, new technologies are emerging that do not require glasses. These technologies, called autostereoscopic ...
متن کاملRepresentation of stereoscopic edges in monkey visual cortex
Form perception in random-dot stereograms is based on information that resides in the correlation between the two images, but is not present in either image alone. We have studied the coding of stereoscopic figures in the neural activity of areas V1 and V2 of alert behaving monkeys. While cells in V1 generally responded according to the disparity of the surface at the receptive field, we found ...
متن کاملEffect of Disparity Noise on Stereoscopic Surface Perception in Human and Ideal Observers
Stereoscopic surface detection of human and ideal observers was assessed using a signal detection paradigm. Signal displays were disparity defined sinusoidal or square wave corrugations in depth containing various amounts of additive disparity noise. Distracter displays were created by scrambling pure signal stimuli along the vertical dimension destroying surface representation while leaving th...
متن کاملStereoscopic (cyclopean) motion sensing
This paper reviews literature on the motion processing of dynamic change in binocular disparity, called stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion. Studies investigating the visual processing of stereoscopic motion in the Z-axis, stereoscopic motion in the X/Y plane, and cyclopean motion are discussed. It is concluded that stereoscopic motion is processed by a motion-sensing system composed of special-pur...
متن کاملDiscrimination of rotated-in-depth curves is facilitated by stereoscopic cues, but curvature is not tuned for stereoscopic rotation-in-depth
Object recognition suffers when objects are rotated-in-depth, as for example with changes to viewing angle. However the loss of recognition can be mitigated by stereoscopic cues, suggesting that object coding is not strictly two-dimensional. Here we consider whether the encoding of rotation-in-depth (RID) of a simple curve is tuned for stereoscopic depth. Experiment 1 first determined that test...
